Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 sheets puff pastry sheets (10 by 10 inches) Use a high-quality product like Pepperidge Farm.
  • 1/2 cup Nutella Or your favorite chocolate hazelnut spread.
  • 1 large egg Free-range is recommended for the egg wash.
  • 1 tablespoon water To mix with the egg for the wash.
  • to taste none icing sugar Optional for dusting at the end.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Defrost the puff pastry according to package instructions. Transfer one sheet onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  3. Gently melt the Nutella over a double boiler or in the microwave for about 20 seconds.
  4. Spoon the melted Nutella onto the puff pastry sheet, spreading it evenly to the edges.
  5. Place the second puff pastry sheet on top of the Nutella-covered sheet. Dust lightly with flour.
  6. Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into a triangle starting from the top down to each corner to form a tree shape.
  7. Roll out any leftover scraps and cut them into star shapes for decoration.
  8. Pinch the two triangles of puff pastry together at the trunk and trim the bottom.
  9. Make diagonal cuts along each side of the tree, about one inch apart, and twist each piece gently to form branches.
  10. Mix the egg and water to create your egg wash and brush it over the entire tree and the star shapes.
  11. Bake for about 20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
  12. Once out of the oven, dust generously with icing sugar before serving.

Notes

Keep an eye on your puff pastry as it bakes; every oven is different. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze the unbaked tree for up to a month.
