Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 lb beef or chicken, thinly sliced Consider using flank steak for beef or chicken breast for a lighter option.
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce Look for low-sodium versions if you’re watching your salt intake.
  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce This adds a sweet and savory depth.
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar For balancing out the savory notes.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh is best!
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated Don’t skip this; it adds a lovely zing!
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil For that nutty finish.
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil For frying—can also use a neutral oil like canola.
  • 1 piece onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup carrots, julienned
  • 1 cup bell peppers, thinly sliced Any color you like!
  • 1 cup broccoli florets
  • 2 pieces green onions, chopped Optional, for garnish.
  • 1/2 tsp red pepper flakes Optional, for those who enjoy a kick.
  • 2 cups cooked rice Jasmine or basmati work great as a base!

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat, add the vegetable oil until it shimmers.
  2. Toss in the thinly sliced beef or chicken. Stir-fry for 4-5 minutes until the meat is browned and fully cooked. Once done, remove it from the pan and set aside.
  3. In the same hot pan, add minced garlic, grated ginger, and sliced onion. Sauté for 2-3 minutes until everything is fragrant and the onions soften.
  4. Toss in the julienned carrots, bell peppers, and broccoli florets. Stir-fry for another 3-4 minutes until they’re nice and tender-crisp.
  5. Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper flakes if you’re feeling spicy. Ensure the sauce covers all the veggies!
  6. Add the cooked meat back into the pan. Stir-fry for 2 more minutes so the meat absorbs all those delicious flavors.
  7. Drizzle the sesame oil over the dish for that final touch of nuttiness.
  8. Garnish with chopped green onions and serve hot over a generous bed of cooked rice.

Notes

Ensure meats are at room temperature to allow for even cooking. If you’re using frozen veggies, thaw them beforehand for optimal results.
