Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 oz tomato paste Use high-quality paste for the best flavor.
  • 1/2 cup water Helps to thin out the mixture to your desired consistency.
  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar Opt for organic for a more pronounced tang.
  • 4 tablespoons honey Feel free to substitute with maple syrup or agave for a vegan option.
  • 1/2 tablespoon onion powder Fresh onions can be used, but powder mixes seamlessly.
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic powder Fresh garlic can be used but requires extra cooking time.
  • 1 pinch salt Adjust to your preference for seasoning.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, mix together the tomato paste, water, apple cider vinegar, honey, onion powder, garlic powder, and salt until everything is well combined.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer while stirring occasionally. Watch for those little bubbles!
  3. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low. Semi-cover the saucepan and let it cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  4. Take the saucepan off the heat and allow the ketchup to cool for about 10 minutes.
  5. Pour the warm ketchup into your container of choice. For best flavor, let it chill in the fridge for a minimum of a few hours (or overnight) before diving in.
  6. Your homemade ketchup will stay fresh in an airtight container for about 4 weeks in the fridge.

Notes

Feel free to customize the recipe by adding spicy elements like cayenne or fresh herbs. Watch carefully while simmering to prevent burning.
